Types of Decorative Gems for Teeth
First, let's understand the terminology and differences:
  1. Rhinestones: Affordable and stylish, these are small glass stones cut for a bright shine. They are attached to the enamel with dental adhesive, requiring no drilling.
  2. Skyce: These are more expensive than rhinestones, featuring precious and semi-precious stones up to 2.5 mm. The original SKYCE was developed by Ivoclar Vivadent, and now all dental jewelry is often referred to as Skyce.
  3. Twinkle: This is a luxury product made of precious stones and metals up to 5 mm in diameter. Ideal for those who appreciate high-status luxury, Twinkles requires creating a bed on the tooth surface for strong fixation. However, many dentists prefer inlaying a veneer or crown to avoid drilling a healthy tooth.
You can customize the shape (stars, flowers, etc.) and color of these gems to your preference. Important Note: Do not use simple rhinestones meant for accessories, as they do not comply with hygiene standards and can damage your teeth.
Practical Benefits of Dental Décor
Many patients wonder if Skyce harms their teeth. Unlike Twinkles, which require drilling, rhinestones do not damage enamel and can mask imperfections like darkened fillings, hypoplasia, and enamel stains.
Disadvantages and Contraindications
The procedure has several restrictions, including occlusion defects, serious dental injuries, high enamel abrasion, allergies to components, acute oral diseases, severe dental chips or cracks, age below 12, poor oral hygiene, and a tendency for plaque formation. Additionally, dental jewelry cannot be fixed on crowns or veneers. Fortunately, most contraindications are relative and can be managed with proper dental care.
Drawbacks of Skyce:
  • Avoid tough and sticky foods.
  • Exclude drinks and foods with coloring pigments.
  • Smoking can leave unaesthetic traces.
Advantages:
  • Non-invasive fixation that does not require tooth dissection.
  • Durable and non-oxidizing materials.
  • Easy to hide imperfections without expensive treatment.
  • Longevity up to 5-7 years with proper care.
  • Comfortable and non-damaging to teeth and mucous membranes.
  • Few dietary restrictions.
Fixation Options and Procedure Features
There are two methods for attaching rhinestones to enamel:
  1. Using dental glue without injuring the tooth, which is gentle and requires no restoration after removal.
  2. Inlaying a crown or native enamel for Twinkles, which involves drilling a depression for secure fixation.
The dentist determines the best method based on the type of jewelry and the condition of the teeth. The installation process takes about 45 minutes and includes:
  • Professional cleaning and plaque removal.
  • Optional in-office whitening.
  • Enamel degreasing for optimal adhesion.
  • Applying dental glue to the jewelry and tooth, pressing the Skyce to the enamel, and drying with a photopolymer lamp.
  • Final polishing and care instructions.
Proper Care
To maximize the lifespan of your dental gems, follow these guidelines:
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, being gentle around the Skyce.
  • Use a suitable toothbrush (avoid electric and hard bristles).
  • Avoid abrasive toothpaste.
  • Exclude hard and sticky foods from your diet.
  • Schedule regular dental visits for check-ups and polishing.
If You Want to Remove Skyce
Do not attempt to remove the gem yourself. A dentist can safely remove it without damaging the enamel. For Twinkles, a filling will be needed to repair the depression after removal.
Cost Determinants
The price of installing dental jewelry depends on several factors:
  • Type of Skyce.
  • Method of fastening.
  • Need for additional treatment.
  • Clinic status.
  • Dentist's expertise.
The procedure starts at $120. Ensure the product is certified and choose a reputable clinic.
